Centrelink

Depending on your child’s situation, you may be eligible for a Carer Allowance from Centrelink. This allowance is not means tested and is a fortnightly payment for the carer (usually a parent) of a child with significant health and/or developmental needs (currently $115.40). If the Carer Allowance is granted, an annual Health Care Card is also issued for the child.  In some circumstances, you may qualify for back payment of Carer Allowance for up to 12 weeks from the date you lodge your claim. You will need to contact Centrelink directly to obtain the appropriate forms. The Medical Report forms can be completed by a recognised health professional (e.g., general practitioner, paediatrician, psychologist, speech pathologist etc.) and can be downloaded from the Centrelink website: www.humanservices.gov.au/customer/forms/sa431.

Note: People who are eligible for the Carer Allowance for a child will also automatically receive an annual Child Disability Assistance Payment of up to $1,000 for each child in their care as well as the Carer Supplement of up to $600. More information regarding the Carer Allowance, Child Disability Assistance Payment and Carer Supplement can also be found online at www.humanservices.gov.au/customer/subjects/payments-for-carers.
